The distance between the 2 countries is only about 1000 km (2 or 3 days of sea transport).
Currently in 2023, there is hardly any trade concerning fruits and vegetables, oils, herbs and spices.
Years ago the Brokopondo Agreement was created to intensify collaboration and trade between Suriname and Barbados.
Barbados currently is an importing country, mainly from the United States.

Brokopondo Agreement
In 2019 Suriname and Barbados pledged to do more and better business with each other.
They signed a treaty for this called The Brokopondo Agreement.
One of the ideas of this agreement was to provide land to Barbadian farmers in Suriname for black belly sheep.
Because of all kinds of difficulties to implement the intentions and ideas of the agreement, not much has been done up until known .
Minister Sewdien of Suriname is determined to do much more.
Two things will be focused on:
- to encourage and guide farmers in producing more fruits and vegetables.
- to be more visible as Suriname with a trade center in Barbados.
For this at LVV a Brokopondo Export Plan has been created, ready to be executed.
If this plan is carried out correctly, it could lead to 1000 extra jobs in the agriculture sector in Suriname.

Knowledge and key organizations are currently missing to facilitate seamless trade between Suriname and Barbados
Project: Mutual Trade Centers
In Barbados and Suriname a trade center should be set up and monthly a trade mission and conferences should and can be organized.
Project: Training and guidance for increasing production
The Surinamese outgrowers and entrepreneurs should be trained and guided more and better in increasing their production of fruits and vegetables.
One option considered is to use the government plantation Alliance to support outgrowers and entrepreneurs with facilities and plant materials.
